One of the greatest Israeli artists. He became famous also for his colorful sheep portrait paintings, which he began painting in 1995; Since then, he created thousands of portraits from this series. In his youth he was a shepherd, something that greatly influenced his works. His memories as a shepherd are recorded and edited with precision in charcoal and pencil drawings. The sheep were drawn mainly in the vicinity of the Israeli border, wire fences. What affected him the most is the fact that the sheep are actually also confined by an international border. In his sculptures he used to use iron and other materials to create epic environmental art. At the beginning, in the 1960s, he used to sculpt in an abstract style by using sharp geometric shapes, and later he also sculpted some less abstract sculptures, including “Binding of Isaac”, a street sculpture made of Corten steel located in Tel Aviv in front of the Tel Aviv Museum and the court building. His street sculpture “Elevation” is made of steel and is 15 meters high. The statue is located near the “Habima” theater in Tel Aviv, and is a prominent landmark of its surroundings. In 1995, he was chosen as the laureate of the Israel Prize in the field of sculpture. In 2005, the film “The Blue Sheep” documenting his life and work was screened at the Jerusalem Festival. Menashe Kadishman died on May 8, 2015, at the age of 82, and was buried in Kiryat Shaul Cemetery.
