Yair Garbuz (1945–2026) was one of Israel’s most influential contemporary artists. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he developed a distinctive visual language that combines painting, collage, drawing, and text, creating an ongoing dialogue between art history, Israeli culture, collective memory, and contemporary social and political realities. His works are characterized by layered imagery, wit, irony, and cultural critique, blending elements of American Pop Art with the Israeli “Want of Matter” aesthetic. Garbuz primarily worked in mixed media on plywood, paper, and canvas, incorporating acrylic, ink, graphite, collage, and handwritten or printed text as integral compositional elements. Throughout his career, he held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Israel and abroad, including several solo exhibitions at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, while also exhibiting at the Israel Museum, the Haifa Museum of Art, the Ramat Gan Museum of Israeli Art, and other leading institutions. His works are represented in major museum collections throughout Israel as well as in important private collections worldwide.
